Build a Better Farm: Making Smart Capital Purchases

Learn how to make smart capital purchases on your small farm! In this session, attendees will learn how to evaluate and compare potential capital purchases from tractors to high tunnels to solar panels. We’ll look at a cost/benefit analysis of capital improvements on the farm and learn how to calculate pay-back periods. Learn how to evaluate impacts of a capital purchase on farm labor and costs.

Economist and farmer Allen Edwards of Edwards Family Farm will lead the session on smart capital purchase decisions. A panel of small farmers will share their stories of real life good and bad capital purchases and their impacts on the farm. The session will include an interactive work session in which attendees will go step-by-step through a capital purchase decision. This workshop is geared to experienced small farmers who need to make capital purchase decisions in order to scale up their operations. It will also be helpful for beginning farmers in making decisions about what equipment or infrastructure is absolutely essential to their operation.
